The collection consists primarily of letters and other materials received by both Ellen Doyle and Mary Evans from their relations and members of the Persse family. These items document the health, activities, economic troubles, the logistics of emigration and other dynamics of family separation. The collection also contains transcriptions of the letters by Kirby Miller and historical essays related to this collection written by historian James Charles Roy.
